Next Sunday will begin our congregational fast. In the past God has answered many prayers. So many of us have been blessed spiritually by this time of sacrifice to God.
Here are some scriptures you can study as we prepare for next week’s fast:
Matthew 6: 16-18 Fasting is a personal covenant you make with God. It is not for public recognition.
Joel 1: 13-14, 2: 12-14 Repentance and humility are to accompany fasting. It is a time to look at our hearts and live humbly before God.
Acts 14: 21-23 Prayer and fasting should be part of the big decisions we make in life.
Acts 13: 1-3 God’s Spirit moves when we fast as a congregation.
Ezra 8: 21 Prayer and fasting to humble ourselves instead of God having to do it for us.
Nehemiah 1: 1-4; Esther 4 (read the entire chapter) Special prayer and fasting are for times when the situation is completely out of our control. God does his best work when we are the most desperate.
2 Samuel 12: 11-23 God does not always answer yes to our fast. Sometimes the answer will be no. Often our prayers are answered in ways we do not anticipate.
Isaiah 58 This passage teaches us that it is about our hearts. Giving up a few things or not eating certain foods is not the answer. Our hearts are to be broken and remade into the heart of Jesus.
As we begin our congregational fast next week, let’s all pray for and encourage one another.
Grace and Peace,
